Volkswagen- every driver has a story with this brand in it. They were either behind the wheel or a competitor on the tarmac- Volkswagen is a force to reckon with. With numerous engines under their belt, the Volkswagen team’s most talked-about engine models in recent years must be the GTI and TSI. These engines were built with performance and reliability in mind. Both engine designs draw a lot of inspiration from the VW Golf. These two engines have their roots in the VW labs but their differences though subtle set them apart. These two performance heavyweights draw acclamation in almost equal measure with some fans unable to even tell them apart. What Are The Most Common Differences Between The TSI And GTI Engines? The TSI engines are simply engines built to serve high torque needs while maintaining horsepower. They bring on board a supercharger and turbocharger combo that is aimed at maintaining performance at the different rpm ranges. The GTI engines on the other hand are slightly similar to their counterparts in multiple aspects except on the track- the GTIs are faster and can deliver more power even at high rpm. GTIs are a darling for speed lovers but a nightmare for economic drivers- the extra power comes with higher fuel consumption levels. What Is A TSI Engine? What Is A GTI Engine?Differences Between The TSI And GTI EnginesAre There Any Similarities Between The GTI And TSI Engine?Which Is Faster GTI Or TSI?Take Away What Is A TSI Engine? Jargon aside, TSI is a short representation of Turbocharged Stratified Injection- this is a turbocharged engine. The term does not refer to an individual engine but a series of engines under the VW group brand. It comprises 3, 4, and 6 cylinder engines- all turbocharged and petrol propelled. These engines are deployed in some pretty powerful models- the Skoda Octavia, the Golf, and the VW Touareg among others. If you are familiar with the Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection engines TFSI then this should be easy- it’s an improved version of the same. It comes with better reliability and a few usability features. On the technical aspect, the TSI is lighter, cools better, and has a more improved fuel injection system compared to the TFSI. These improvements mean the TSIs’ consume less and consequently emit less. VW offers these engines in varying power outputs and delivery. In 2020, they made the green leap by introducing the mild-hybrid version. What Is A GTI Engine? GTI is an acronym for the highly praised Grand Tourer Injection. Linguists trace the term back to the Italian “Gran Turismo Iniezione”. In simple terms, GTI means the engine bears a direct injection system. The direct injection might seem common today and not worth mentioning but in 1976 when VW introduced the system, there was nothing better. Over the years, the name gained acceptance and is freely used to refer to improved performance in automobiles. The GTI bases its initial design on the VW golf hatchback- for over 50 years now; the engine has done nothing but impress. It inherited some pretty impressive features from the golf hatch which when combined with the improved aspects, deliver astonishing performance. Differences Between The TSI And GTI Engines Engine TransmissionReliabilityFuel economyCost Of CarGolf TSIConventionalHighly reliable32mpg$23,195 MSRPGolf GTI6-speed DSGBuilt for speed27mpg$28,595 MSRP Transmission The GTI is a performance car. To meet the speed demands VW installed a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. The TSI cannot support such transmission and has to contend with a conventional non-performance transmission. The GTI also has an upgraded suspension to accommodate the high-speed maneuvering. Reliability The TSI might not be fast enough for you but its longevity is not in doubt. If you are the type to repeatedly miss service dates, go with the TSI- it’s the Toyota of Golfs. The GTI is the complete opposite of the TSI. To maintain high performance, the car demands timely and frequent servicing without mentioning the need to regularly top up the tank. Fuel Economy The GTI, being a performance car, consumes more compared to its everyday drive counterpart the TSI. With a TSI, you can expect a combined 32mpg while a GTI driver will get a combined 27mpg. Cost Of Car If you harbor plans of hosting one of these engines in your garage then you ought to rethink your budget. The dealer will demand about $23,000 for a TSI while the cost of a GTI can stretch up to $28,000 or more-performance is anything but cheap. Are There Any Similarities Between The GTI And TSI Engine? Aside from being improved versions of the Golf, these two engines bear very few common features. Some reviewers will talk about the improved injection system but that is a common feature across most modern cars. Which Is Faster GTI Or TSI? The answer is quite apparent; the TSI is no match for the GTI on the track. The fastest TSI folks out about 170hp which is quite weak compared to the 227hp delivered by a conventional GTI. Take Away Both the TSI and GTI engines are worthy with each bringing to the table its best attributes. Our expectations from a car are subjective- GTI drivers expect speed while their TSI counterparts expect reliability and safety. The fact that these two engines are based on the VW Golf clears any doubt you may have about their effectiveness both on the track and on highways.

If you have been interested in purchasing a Volkswagen Golf or have seen them on the road, you may have stumbled upon many different abbreviations and wondered what they mean. The Golf model has been one of Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicles for decades and doesn’t look like it will be slowing down anytime soon. The main question we’ll be answering in this post is what is the difference between Volkswagen’s Golf TSI vs GTI. However, we thought we might as well dive into the differences of all the Golf trims TSI, TDI, GTI, & R. Volkswagen tends to use many abbreviations when it comes to describing their vehicles and trims. So to make it easy to comprehend, we’ll start off by breaking down the above abbreviations. TSI, stands for Turbocharged Stratified Injection, and it is used to describe the turbocharged engines in many of their vehicles. The TSI badge can be found on the base model of the Volkswagen Golf or on top of many engine bays. GTI, which stands for Grand Tourer Injection, is Volkswagen Golf’s performance model. TDI, which stands for Turbocharged Direct Injection, is Volkswagen’s identification of a diesel engine. Lastly, R is the highest performance tier of the Golf and, as you can probably guess, it stands for Racing. Golf TSI vs GTI First off, we’ll jump into the difference between the Volkswagen Golf TSI vs the Volkswagen GTI because it seems to be the most asked question. For starters, the TSI and GTI are both different versions of the Volkswagen Golf. The TSI is the base model of the Golf and has an S, SE, & SEL trim, while the GTI is the performance-oriented model of the Golf. The Volkswagen Golf began production in 1974, with the GTI being produced in 1976. There are many similarities between the two, but there are also many differences between the two, so let’s jump into it. Golf TSI Engines There have been many engines over the years, so we are going to focus on the most recent engines in the MK6 & MK7 generations. To start off, the MK6 Golf TSI was built on the Volkswagen PQ35 platform and featured a TSI that put down anywhere from 120hp-158hp & 148lb-ft & 177lb-ft of torque and a TSI engine that put down 158hp & 184lb-ft of torque. While the MK7 Golf TSI was built on the MQB platform and featured many engines depending on where they were produced. A TSI BlueMotion engine that put down anywhere from 120hp-148hp & 148lb-ft-188lb-ft of torque. A TSI engine that, put into the facelifted Golf, put down 148hp & 184lb-ft of torque. Lastly, it featured a TSI engine that put down 170hp & 199lb-ft of torque. GTI Engines The MK6 GTI was also built on the Volkswagen PQ35 platform, but featured a TSI engine that put down 210hp & 207lb-ft of torque. While the MK7 GTI was built on the Volkswagen MQB platform and featured a TSI engine that put down 217hp & 258lb-ft of torque. However, with the MK7 GTI, they released a performance package, often referred to as simply “PP”, that put down 227hp & 258lb-ft of torque due to a software tweak. Other Differences Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Engines aside, there are multiple differences when it comes to the interior, MSRP, fuel economy, and performance options. On the interior, the only real difference is that the GTI can have leather seats or Clark Plaid upholstery. Exterior Both the Golf and the GTI are sporty modern cars on the exterior, but the GTI sports a couple of exterior enhancements aside from the GTI badge. You will notice the upgraded sport side skirts and the sportier honeycomb mesh grille. Lastly, on the later models, GTI’s feature sportier rims and red trim all over to match the red plaid interior. Fuel Economy & Reliability Since there are different engines, fuel economy is different. The 2020 Golf TSI gets 35mpg on the highway and 29mpg in the city for a combined mpg of 32mpg. The GTI, being a more powerful engine, gets fewer mpg coming in at 32mpg on the highway and 24mpg in the city for a combined 27mpg. On the topic of engines, the GTI’s engine is not near as reliable as the Golf TSI’s. This is mostly because many car enthusiasts tend to modify the TSI engine. However, there were factory issues with the TSI engines as well. Performance Next is the performance upgrades. Given the GTI is the Golf’s performance-oriented trim, it had to get some performance upgrades. The GTI features a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission which is not found in the Golf TSI’s. Also, there were some suspension upgrades such as a performance monitor, adaptive chassis control, extra driving mode selections, and upgraded stiffer suspension. Cost As you can imagine, with the interior, performance, and engine upgrades that the GTI boasts over the Golf, the GTI is more expensive. The 2020 Base Golf TSI comes in at $23,195 MSRP, while the GTI comes in $28,595 MSRP. If you are looking for a more reliable and more fuel-efficient vehicle, go with the Golf TSI. However, if you’re looking for a more sporty and more tunable vehicle, then the GTI is for you and the extra money is worth it. Volkswagen Golf TDI Since we’ve discussed the differences between the Golf TSI and GTI, we’ll go into the TDI. As stated above, TDI stands for Turbocharged Direct Injection. In all TDI-badged Volkswagen vehicles, you will find a diesel engine with direct injection. The Volkswagen Golf TDI was first introduced in the MK3 Golf 1991-1997, which was very innovative back in the day. The first TDI engine was a Many benefits are found in the TDI engines, but there are also downfalls. Some of the benefits include increased fuel economy, with up to 51mpg, and more torque than the other Volkswagen petrol engines. The is seen as one of the most reliable Volkswagen engines that have lasted up to 300,000 miles or longer. Whereas, some of the downfalls include the infamous VW emissions scandal that ended in Volkswagen paying a $ billion settlement. Volkswagen Golf R Lastly, the Volkswagen Golf R causes some confusion, so thought we would clear that up as well. Volkswagen is credited with making the “hot-hatch” movement with the GTI and with more competition moving into the space, Volkswagen decided to take the performance up a notch. The Golf R, Golf Racing or R32, is the highest performance-oriented Golf to date. The first R32 was introduced in the MK4 Golf, 2002 because of Volkswagen’s success in the rally sport. The first R was produced in the MK6 Golf, 2009. Golf R or R32 Engines The Golf R or R32 have had many different powerful engines over the years. The MK4 Golf R32 featured a NA Vr6 engine that put down 240hp & 236lb-ft and was also the world’s first production car with a DSG. The MK5 Golf R32 also featured a NA Vr6 that put down 247hp & 236lb-ft of torque. The MK6 Golf R replaced the R32 name association with just “R” and featured a TFSI engine that produced 266hp & 258lb-ft. Lastly, the MK7 Golf R featured a newly revised EA888 TFSI engine that put down 276hp-296hp depending on the climate & 276lb-ft of torque. TSI, GTI, TDI, & R Conclusion It is rumored that the Base Golf will be discontinued from the US market in 2022, but the GTI will stick around. In 2020, Volkswagen only sold around 22,000 base Golf’s, which lead to the discontinuation. To conclude this post, we hope we were helpful in explaining the differences between the Golf TSI, Golf GTI, Golf TDI, and the Golf R. Let us know what you are driving or in the market for in the comments! Golf TSI vs GTI What’s The Difference? Are you looking for a sporty compact car that offers plenty of power and agility? Look no further than the Volkswagen Golf TSI Vs GTI. Both models offer efficient performance with exciting acceleration that has become synonymous with Volkswagen. The Volkswagen Golf is a mainstay of the automaker’s lineup. In its various incarnations, it has been a best seller for decades. Two of the most popular versions are the Golf TSI and the Golf GTI. While both cars have their fans, there are some key differences that set them apart. Here, we look at those differences and help you decide which version is right for you. What is Golf TSI?What is Golf GTI?Features of Golf TSI vs GTIHow do the Golf TSI and GTI compare in terms of performance? What are the unique features of each car?FAQsWhat is the primary difference between a Golf TSI and Golf GTI? Which Car is right for me?Conclusion -Volkswagen’s TSI technology is designed to use an Atkinson cycle engine for improved fuel economy, lower emissions, and more power. It first appeared on the Mk6 GTI, which combined a turbocharged engine with direct injection to deliver 200 hp and 207 of torque. This was paired with either a six-speed manual or DSG transmission. What is Golf GTI? -The Golf GTI is the higher performance version of the TSI. Like its sibling, it was first introduced on the Mk6 platform, combining a turbocharged litre engine with direct injection to deliver 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque mated to either a six-speed manual or DSG transmission. The main differences between the TSI and GTI can be found under the hood, where the GTI has a larger turbocharger and intercooler, psi of boost as opposed to ~5psi and twin fuel injectors per cylinder which pump fuel into the cylinders at higher pressure 350 bar vs 250 bar. Features of Golf TSI vs GTI Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Design -Both cars use the same basic design, which is a modern interpretation on Volkswagen’s classic styling. The GTI adds LED daytime running lights and 17″ alloy wheels. It also comes with xenon headlights and fog lights as standard equipment. Both cars use a power-operated retractable metal roof. Golf TSI vs GTI Powertrains -The Golf TSI has a litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 150 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque mated to either a six-speed manual or DSG transmission an optional 4Motion all-wheel drive system is also available on some models. The GTI features the same litre turbocharged four cylinders as the TSI, but outputs 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque mated to either a six-speed manual or DSG transmission heavier duty transmissions are standard equipment on more powerful versions like the Autobahn and R. Both use front wheel drive, although 4Motion all-wheel drive is an option on the GTI in the US only. Golf TSI vs GTI Performance -Both cars deliver similar performance numbers; the sole advantage going to the larger turbo and intercooler on the GTI 7 psi vs 5 psi. Both cars use an electronically controlled limited slip differential which sends power not only to the front wheels, but also to the outside rear when cornering. This results in even more balanced handling — particularly under hard driving when inside wheels spin at similar speeds torque-vectoring. Golf TSI vs GTI Features -Both cars come with standard equipment like power locks, windows and mirrors. However, the TSI comes with standard Sirius XM Satellite Radio whereas it’s an extra on the GTI although both are compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The TSI also has a traditional keyless entry set up which is becoming increasingly rare, while the GTI instead uses Volkswagen’s “easy close” system where you simply push down to shut, then pull up to open. The first generation of this system had some problems — particularly when trying to open near metal objects like lamp posts or other cars — but was much improved by the second generation. Which Golf is right for you? -The Golf TSI is the more economical of the two, but still delivers good performance and excellent handling. The GTI offers an extra boost in power and slightly better fuel economy, along with larger wheels, xenon lights and all-wheel drive availability. It also has a more advanced keyless entry system, although if you like having satellite radio or Android Auto / Apple CarPlay standard equipment on your car then go for the TSI. Golf TSI vs GTI Interior -The Golf TSI has the advantage here, as it’s basically identical to the mid-sized Jetta which was recently refreshed. The GTI, on the other hand is fairly dated with design cues like the red stripe across the dashboard only seen in early Volkswagen models. It also features a traditional keyless entry system — push to lock and pull to open; whereas later by generations of Volkswagens use a push-to-close button and pull down to open. This results in several issues including accidental lockouts when you accidentally press close instead of open or vice versa. Golf TSI vs GTI Dimensions -The TSI is very slightly larger in every dimension except height, where it’s roughly equal. The larger wheels on the GTI result in a slightly wider track which improves handling but reduces interior space. It also comes with a backup camera as standard equipment, while it’s an option on the TSI. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Exterior -The TSI has a more modern look to it, with LED daytime running lights and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment. The GTI has xenon headlights a dealer-installed upgrade is available and 18-inch alloy rims. In terms of exterior dimensions, both cars are very similar although Volkswagen did recently update the styling of both — including new bumpers for both models. The TSI now looks very much like its Jetta sibling inside and out. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Cargo Room -The TSI has a bit more space for your cargo, with cubic feet of space compared to 10 cu ft in the GTI. The difference is so small it might be difficult to notice in real life — especially if you have a large enough garage or driveway to store both cars side by side at home. Golf TSI vs GTI Engine and Transmission -Both come standard with a turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine; however, the TSI has an upgraded version that makes 147 horsepower compared to 115 hp in the GTI and up to 170 horsepower in Performance trim. That’s important when you consider that both cars come in either front-wheel drive FWD or optional but in the GTI only four-wheel drive 4×4. The advanced damping system in the TSI takes advantage of all this power and makes it much less likely that you’ll end up stuck in snow or mud. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Fuel Economy -The smaller engine may offer more low-end torque, but it also delivers worse fuel economy than the somewhat larger unit found in the TDI diesel version. It’s EPA estimated at 28 mpg combined for FWD models and 27 mpg combined with 4×4. That’s roughly 10% lower than either a 2WD TDI model or a manual transmission. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Price -The TSI is a bit less expensive with a starting price of $20,995 compared to the GTI which starts at $24,495 for a standard Golf SE model. Golf TSI vs GTI Safety -Both the TSI and GTI come standard with antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. The optional Driver Assistance Package adds blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert to this list. That makes the TSI slightly better protected in case of an accident; however, both cars including the GTI achieve top safety ratings from various consumer publications such as the IIHS TDI only. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Cool Fact! -The Golf was one of two cars planned for production at Volkswagen’s new plant in Chattanooga Tennessee. It was planned as a Jetta for sale worldwide except North America, and a USA-only Golf until Mazda objected and forced Volkswagen to bring the car here. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Accessories -The Golf R reviewed above is very similar to the GTI in exterior and interior styling, with a few extras such as an upgraded engine. At around $35k it’s closer in price to the upcoming TSI CC which will sit above the standard version and offer more power, luxury, and equipment upgrades. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Dimensions -The GTI is slightly longer inches with a wider track inches. The TSI has shorter front and rear overhangs but is 1 inch taller than the GTI with its 18-inch alloy wheels. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Tires and Wheels -The GTI comes with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, while the TSI has 18’s as an optional feature. The GTI also offers a 4×4 option for around $1k more than the TSI or TDI. Golf TSI vs GTI Colors -Both have roughly 10 color choices each including some hues not available on all trims of either car… so pick carefully! Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Comfort and Reliability -Both have standard power windows, locks, and mirrors. Both have a central locking system with an “electronic immobilizer” that will disable the starter if it detects a problem. The TSI will give you a bit more front legroom, but the GTI has more rear space overall thanks to its sloping roofline. Flooring is either carpet or rubberized plastic in both cases. Golf TSI vs Golf GTI Popularity -The TDI diesel is the most popular model in the Golf lineup, followed by the TSI. The GTI comes in at number three behind both. However, this could be changing with the new high-performance versions being rolled out for 2014… so keep your eyes open! The similarities of Golf TSI and Golf GTI -Mechanically, both the TSI and GTI have a sport suspension. The basic chassis is identical in terms of dimensions and strength. Both come with antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag for safety. The differences of Golf TSI and Golf GTI -Both the TSI and GTI come standard with a 5-speed manual transmission while a 6-speed automatic is available on both cars as well. That’s where most of the similarities end though – from there you can get FWD or 4×4 on the TSI but not on the GTI which only comes in 4×4 trim GTD is front wheel drive only. And that’s just on the base models… the Golf R has a completely different powertrain as mentioned above. -Higher trim levels, especially with the TSI and GTI, can offer different features such as a panorama sunroof, upgraded audio systems with navigation and satellite radio compatibility. Both have heated leather seating surfaces as an option too. -The Golf TDI is powered by a turbodiesel engine that makes 140hp at 4,000rpm and 236lb ft of torque from 1,750 to 3,250rpm. That gives it a 0-60 time of approximately 10 seconds depending on gear ratios and conditions – which is not bad for a small diesel! The Golf TSI uses a turbocharged gasoline engine that makes 170hp at 4,500rpm and 184lb ft of torque from 1,400 to 4,400rpm. It too has variable valve timing VVT and direct injection for better economy and emissions… but the TDI’s power comes on lower in the rev range for greater midrange punch. -Both models come with standard front wheel drive – except for the top end GTI which comes with 4motion all-wheel drive as an option. The TSI gets around 45mpg while the TDI can get up to 50mpg if you stay out of the boost! The winner -It’s largely subjective, but overall, the TSI might be considered the more sensible buy of the two. It has pretty much all you need in terms of safety, comfort, and fuel efficiency… plus it carries a lower price tag to boot! On the other hand, if having an autobox isn’t a deal breaker for you then go with the TDI or even R – both are good drivers’ cars that will put some fun back into your daily commute! The choice is yours – just grab one of our used VWs before they’re gone! How do the Golf TSI and GTI compare in terms of performance? The Volkswagen Golf TSI and GTI are two of the most popular models in the VW range, both offering drivers a great blend of performance and comfort. When it comes to performance, the two vehicles offer distinct differences. The Golf TSI is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This modest power output is ideal for those who want an economical car that can still provide plenty of driving pleasure. The Golf TSI also comes with a manual transmission as standard, which helps to give it an extra sporty feel. On the other hand, the Golf GTI takes things up a notch with an impressive turbocharged four-cylinder engine that churns out 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This power output makes it much faster off the line than its TSI counterpart and gives it significantly more top speed potential when you’re on open roads or highways. The GTI also includes several performance upgrades such as bigger brakes and suspension components, allowing drivers to get even more out of their experience behind the wheel. Both versions offer similar levels of fuel economy and emissions ratings, so they can both be considered quite eco-friendly in comparison to other sportier models in their class. However, if you’re looking for maximum performance off the line and improved handling capabilities, then the Golf GTI is definitely going to be your best bet compared to the modestly powered TSI model. What are the unique features of each car? The Volkswagen Golf TSI and Golf GTI are two of the most popular and sought-after models of the Golf series. Both cars offer a great combination of performance, comfort, and style. The Golf TSI is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This engine offers good acceleration, making it great for daily driving or fun weekend trips. It also comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, allowing drivers to shift through gears quickly and easily while still maintaining fuel efficiency. The Golf TSI also has excellent handling thanks to its front independent suspension, which helps it stay stable on all types of roads. In terms of design, the Golf TSI features an aerodynamic body style with dynamic lines, giving it a modern look that’s sure to turn heads. Inside the cabin you’ll find plenty of premium materials and comfortable seating for up to five passengers. The Golf TSI also comes with several tech features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit display and more. When compared to the Golf TSI, the Golf GTI is quite different in terms of performance, powertrain options and design features. Under the hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pumps out an impressive 229 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque – giving this car amazing acceleration capabilities that make it perfect for spirited drives or trips on twisty roads. This engine is paired with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that allows drivers to shift between gears quickly for smoother transitions when accelerating or decelerating. The Golf GTI also has slightly better handling than the Golf TSI due to its sport suspension system that reduces body roll when cornering at high speeds and provides better overall stability on uneven surfaces or winding roads. On the exterior side, the Golf GTI stands out from its sibling thanks to its aggressive styling cues such as black accents around windows and headlights as well as dual exhaust outlets in back – both adding a sportier look overall compared to other Golf models like the TSI. In terms of interior amenities, the Golf GTI comes standard with heated leather seats along with other comfort features like an auto dimming rearview mirror and keyless entry/start button – plus you get even more tech goodies like an 8″ touchscreen infotainment system with navigation capabilities as well as smartphone integration options like Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility so you can access your favorite apps safely while driving around town! Ditahun 2014 ini, Volkswagen (VW) Indonesia kembali meluncurkan produk untuk pasar otomotif nasional. Tak tanggung-tanggung, VW menghadirkan Golf GTI generasi ke-7 dan Scirocco GTS. Volkswagen makes a lot of great cars, and there are quite a few options available for customers to choose from. For example, the VW Golf is the classic small car that rivals the likes of the Honda Civic or the Toyota Camry. That said, the VW Golf has a cousin, the VW GTI, and while these cars are very much related, there are quite a few differences too. The big difference between the Volkswagen Golf and GTI Just like VW of Palm Springs wrote, the GTI isn’t actually that different from the regular Golf. In fact, technically speaking, the GTI is called the Golf GTI since it’s more or less a trim of the Golf. Like its name may imply however, the GTI is a performance-oriented trim, and it turns the Golf from being a boring but useful small car into a fast and furious little beast. The Golf has only one engine option, according to Consumer Reports, and that’s a four-cylinder engine that gets 147-hp. This is a pretty run-of-the-mill engine that isn’t really sporty but, at the very least, it’s relatively fuel efficient as it gets about 25 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on highways. The GTI, meanwhile, comes with a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gets, according to Consumer Reports, 228-hp. While there’s usually a trade-off between horsepower and fuel economy, this powerful little engine still gets an estimated 24 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on highways, according to VW of Palm Springs. Smaller differences between the two Volkswagens A bigger engine isn’t the only difference, however, and the GTI also comes with other performance enhancements. VW of Palm Springs said that the GTI also has a performance monitor and adaptive chassis control. Unsurprisingly, these upgrades make the GTI a far more exciting car to drive, as it can go fast and also drive smoothly and comfortably, according to Consumer Reports. But upgrades don’t come free, and the GTI is significantly more expensive than the Golf is. VW of Palm Springs wrote that the Golf has an MSRP of about $20,000, while the GTI has an MSRP of over $25,000. To be fair to the Golf however, like Consumer Reports wrote, the Golf drives pretty well, too. And, while Consumer Reports admits that the GTI is the more popular car, the Golf does have fewer flaws than the GTI does. Consumer Reports wrote that the GTI has a single flaw, and that has to do with its “spotty reliability.” On the other hand, the Golf had, according to Consumer Reports, no flaws whatsoever. Are the Volkswagen Golf and GTI good cars? Overall, Consumer Reports really liked the Golf. Consumer Reports wrote that, “If car buying were purely a rational process, a car like the Golf would be the only one most people would need.” That being said, car buying doesn’t seem to be a rational process, since, unfortunately, the 2021 model year of the Golf will be the last model year for the Golf in the Like most models that get discontinued, the Golf isn’t selling that well in America, and VW only sold about 22,000 of them in 2020. For comparison, popular models of other cars routinely sell that many units in a single month. Fortunately, even though the GTI can be seen as a trim of the Golf, the GTI is so popular that VW is not discontinuing it in America. As such, this will probably be the final and perhaps the biggest difference between the two cars. New GTIs will still be available in America in the near future, while the 2021 Golf will be the last model year for the foreseeable future. oQbkEuI.
